Showcase Your Bookcase

If you’re a book lover, you probably have a large collection of books – and no idea how to creatively store them. Or perhaps you think the only way to do so is to stack them together flavorlessly in a bookcase. But bookcases (or bookshelves as we call them back at home) don’t have to  be bland, boring and uninviting. They can be conversation-starters, decoration masterpieces, and even functional parts of your home, doing more than just holding your books.

Here are some ways to do that:

Give it a purpose. Make it functional. Your bookcase can be  used to display art, contain fabric baskets that can be used to store table cloths or toys..

Use it to showcase art. You can use it to show off beautiful paintings, carvings, and photographs.

Play around with symmetry. The shelves do not have to be equal length or equal width.

Play around with color, too! Black, brown and white are not the only colors your bookcase has to be. Red, bright green, even purple would look beautiful against different walls.

Choose a theme. Do you want a sparse or filled bookcase? Do you want it to be wall-to-wall, the room’s main focal point, or a subdued piece tucked away in a corner?

Be different and creative. You can use different types of cases, such as waterfall and ladder bookcases. This website shows thirty of the most creative bookshelf designs.

Arrange books so that they’re easy to locate. You can use alphabetical order, but author, publisher and color are creative arrangement ideas as well.

Avoid clutter – a shelf full of books does not have to be cluttered; you can arrange it so that it still does not look suffocated or suffocating.

Maximize on the decorative strength of your bookcase. Use the top, bottom, and sides of your bookcase as well.

Light is crucial! Place your bookcase in a well-lit part of the room, and light the shelves as well if you need to.
