Maintaining Your Carpet
Last month, we talked about selecting a carpet. In order to keep your carpets looking as good as new, there are a few practical steps that you must take.
The first and perhaps most-obvious thing you must do is vacuum your carpet as often as is necessary. For most homes, this amounts to at least four times a week.
Switch the carpet around if possible to ensure equal wear-and-tear and avoid one section becoming older than the rest faster. An easier alternative is switching the furniture around instead.
Your carpet is bound to have dirt deep within it. A vacuum cleaner can only remove dust and loose dirt. To avoid diseases and bacteria, you must clean within your carpet as well. Use a carpet shampoo or mix some simple laundry soap and water, and brush your carpet. You could also use professional carpet cleaner if you can afford it.
Some people state that you must have your carpet cleaned by professionals at least twice a year, but I disagree with this, If you are a clean person and do not mind wearing a mask and some gloves and getting down on all fours, you can maintain your carpet yourself.
To remove stubborn stains, use a simple cleaning solution, such as a cup of water and a ½teaspoon of detergent. You could also try nail-polish remover. Test this in a hidden section of your carpet first. Blot out the excess stain with some paper towel or scrape off the stain if it is dry. Apply some cleaning solution to your brush and scrub the stained area. Leave it on for five minutes. Rinse it by dabbing it with a lukewarm, damp cloth.
