Psoriasis…

Hey Toyin,
A friend of mine told me she was diagnosed with psoriasis. What is this,
is it a life-threatening condition and is there any way I as a friend can
help her aside from praying for her? Thanks for the good job you’re doing
I’m an avid reader, keep it up.

Hi Jenter,
Thanks for the luv!
Psoriasis is an autoimmune (big word that basically means the body is fighting itself or afflicting itself with a sickness) skin disease that is quite common. When a normal person gets a cut or bruise, the body sends out signals for the skin to regrow itself in order to cover the cut; in a person with psoriasis, the body for no reason sends out a signal that causes the skin to overgrow and this result in thick shiny white patches of skin.

Is it life threatening? No but depending on the severity, it can cause some difficulties like excessive itching, pain, embarrassment (if patches occur in sensitive areas like the hands, neck, arms etc), depression (some people don’t like leaving their homes)and in some cases disfigurement.

How can you help? Praying is always a great way to start the battle with any sickness but like Christ you can be a blessing to your friend by simple things like showing love, acceptance and simple understanding of her situation. Do you know Jesus Christ was friends with the sick? In Mark 14 vs 3, he was even friends with a leper! Your friend might want to isolate herself but being Christ-like to her will help her get through so much.
Stay blessed
T
