When Nobody is Looking
Read it Aloud: And Moses feared, and said, Surely this thing is known (Exodus 2:14b).
(ENTIRE PASSAGE: Exodus 2:11-15).
Ponder it Prayerfully: Moses knew that it was wrong to kill the Egyptian. In a way, we may say he was justified because this Egyptian was smiting a Hebrew, one of Moses’ people. The fact that Moses first of all determined that nobody was watching, and that he hid the Egyptian’s body in the sand, indicates that he knew despite any justification that killing the man would be wrong. He was shocked when the next day he discovered that his secret was out. Fearing for his life, he fled into the land of Midian, in the beginnings of a journey that led him to the place and profession where he would eventually hear from God.
Be a Doer (James 1:22): Just when we think we’re all alone, there is always someone watching. We may not be seen by human eyes, but the Lord sees everything, and assures us that the secret things will eventually come to light. It may or may not be in this realm, but one day, everything will be exposed. As children of God, we should aim to do the right thing, and we should exercise self-control even where our anger may be justified. God says vengeance is His. We should seek Him for wisdom on how to resolve issues. However, even from our past mistakes, God is able to work everything out for our good and to His glory.
Hide It In Your Heart (Psalm 119:11): For nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest; neither any thing hid, that shall not be known and come abroad (Luke 8:17).
Pray it Personally: Abba Father, empty me of myself and my fleshly reactions. The fruit of Your Spirit is self-control. Let me remember that You are watching my every move, and that everything I do, good or bad, will eventually be exposed. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
