Marry-Age
Hi Pea.
Just curious… what do you think is the ideal age for women to get married?
Adjoa.
Hi Adjoa,
That’s a nice name. Thanks for writing!
The ideal age for marriage lies within the purpose of marriage. People get married for companionship/partnership, to procreate, for pleasure, and for purity. The ideal age for marriage is therefore an age at which a person is mature enough to partner with another mature person in critical and even life-saving decision-making on behalf of themselves and of those in their care. It is an age at which a woman is old enough and physically able to participate in bringing another life or other lives (for which she is willing to be responsible) into this world. This woman would ideally have a close, personal relationship with the Lord, which would enable her to understand how to carry herself in a pure manner and how she can be responsible for the abundant life and liberty (pleasure) that God has provided for her.
Most, if not all, women are physically mature enough to bear children by the time they are 18. However, some women are spiritually mature enough for marriage by 16, while others are still children at 35 and 50.
Paul says that widows should not be taken into the congregation when they are less than 60 years of age. He suggests that women should marry and bear children, so that they don’t give the enemy any occasion to speak reproachfully (1 Timothy 5:10-14).
However, some people choose to marry even into their old age, mainly for companionship. If there is an ideal age for marriage, it likely falls anywhere between the ages of 18 and 60, probably in the 20s. Boundless.org author Steve Watters advocates young marriages, and Danielle Crittenden says delaying marriage comes with a cost.
I say each individual is unique; God has a plan for all of us, and the “ideals” revolve around this plan. One person’s ideal may be the worst time for another person. Marriage is a beautiful thing, but all beautiful things must be guarded and approached with caution. Figuring out the ideal age is about staying close to the Lord, knowing His word and seeking His will. Because He is in control, everything will fall into place as it should.
