Reducing Discomfort During Our Period
Hi, is there a way in which we can use diet to improve our mood and the body discomfort during our period? I have heard that if you eat more sugar it makes you have a lighter mood, and magnesium helps with the stomach pain. Other people say reducing sugary items for a few days before your period and then during will help to reduce cramping. I don’t like medication and I know there must be a natural way to ease the whole thing. Any tips you can provide?
Thanks, Coco
Hi Coco,
Thanks for your question.
Our diet can improve our mood and body comfort during and also after our menstrual period. Diet is one of the most important things required for physical wellbeing and contrary to what many people believe, it can actually affect our period health (which is basically what I call a woman’s health during her period).
Don’t eat more sugar, instead try having five to six smaller meals a day instead of three to four heavy ones. Having meals more frequently will keep your blood sugar elevated and this will also keep your mood up.
Stay away from junk food and fatty foods as these will increase the bloated feeling. Try fish, whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and calcium and magnesium-rich foods. Ensure you are taking at least 1000mg of calcium a day as cramping is a result of a drop in blood calcium.
Don’t forget to exercise and try to keep your eating habits healthy throughout the month.
Blessings,
‘Sade.
