Should I worry about baby’s snoring?

Dear Toyin

I had a baby out of wedlock and have since repented and returned to God. Question is about my baby. She snores a lot at night or whenever she is sleeping. Bad snoring that wakes us up and disturbs sleep. What could be the problem?

Love,

Muthoni

Hi Muthoni,

God bless you on this journey you’re on. I am so happy we serve a God of second chances who is calling no matter how far we think we’ve gone. So your bundle of joy is a snorer? (LOL). The answer to your question is quite dependent:

Snoring doesn’t disturb baby

If your baby has no problems, sleeps well and is breathing properly with no distress. I am pleased to say “CALM DOWN MAMA!” Babies are known to be noisy sleepers for different reasons. Their nasal passages are immature and quite narrow; so the narrower the passage, the louder their breathing. Another common reason is when babies have stuffy noses; the passage of the air through the secretions can make a whistling or snoring sound. I would advise you to clear your baby’s nasal passages by either of the following:

Salt water-Pediatricians prescribe squirting a little clean water mixed with salt into the baby’s nose and then sucking any secretions out with a baby bulb (big plastic sucking bulb usually blue in color…LOL)

A humidifier- Sometimes central air can dry the air in your baby’s room. A humidifies moistens air and will make breathing much easier for your child.

A warm bath- A warm bath before bed helps because the humid air releases the congestion in her nasal passages. This works exactly as a humidifies, just cheaper *wink*

Snoring disturbs baby

Although snoring can be harmless, if you notice that your daughter is having breathing problems, is distressed while sleeping, stops breathing at night or having any problem at all, please bring this to your pediatrician’s attention immediately! At times, anatomical differences in nasal structures can be first noticed with snoring.

Stay blessed
