I cough a lot after exercise!

Dear Toyin,

My name is Bisi and I think I might have a bad lung capacity or something. I am always reluctant to do games and sports because I cough a lot when I run or walk fast. Coughing with sometimes a heaviness in my chest and very short of breath. Is this normal and what can be done about it?

Keep those answers coming,

Bisi

Hi Bisi!

It is always wonderful to hear from my Yoruba sisters. From your description, it sounds like you might be experiencing an asthma attack from “Exercise induced asthma”. WAIT! I know I said asthma but it is not the typical “asthma” you might be thinking off.  Exercise induced asthma (EIA) is a very mild form of asthma that gets exacerbated (comes about) only when you exert yourself with sports and intense activity. The first thing you need to know is if you stay away from sports or heavy exertion, there is a great chance you might never get an exacerbation again; so this is the first line of treatment: staying away from sports. On the other hand, if you are someone who cannot stay away from sports, the next line of treatment is to use a physician prescribed Beta agonist pump (inhaler) at least 20 minutes before you start playing. Using an inhaler before you exert yourself will prevent the occurrence of the “asthma attack” and help you have more control of your life.

Stay Blessed
