Question from a Babyfaced Guy

Dear Toyin
I am a guy with a problem! While my friends have full beards and have to shave regularly just to control it, I barely have three strands of hair on my chin! Is something wrong with me?
Babyface

Hi Babyface!

Although I love my female yakuti readers, I love getting mail from male readers. Keep them coming! Ok, now to your question… There are different reasons why you might be lagging behind your peers in regards to facial hair:

Age
As I write this, I am assuming you are at least 16 years old; although there may be 1 or 2 cases of 11 yr old with beards, facial hair starts growing at puberty which is on average 16. Even with the onset of puberty, it might take a couple of years for facial hair to start growing. I would advise you to look at your family and their “hair growth history”. Your father/brother/uncle is a good preview of your future so if your father and brother didn’t get facial hair till 22, you might also have to wait till then.

Race
Some races tend to be more “hairless” when compared to other. Being of Asian descent; (Chinese, Korean, and Japanese) might make you genetically programmed to being more smooth than hairy.
So if this is the problem-sorry, you won’t be sporting a 6 inch beard any time soon but the bigger picture is, you will be saving a lot on shaving cream and razors.

Hormones
This is the one situation where being hairless can actually be a sign of a bigger problem. As I mentioned, facial hair comes with puberty which is triggered by the blood levels of testosterone. Low levels can delay puberty and secondary sex traits like facial, axillary and pubic hair, voice deepening and testicular size. A simple blood test will be able to determine this and there are hormone therapy regiments available to correct this because left untreated, fertility can be affected.
As always, if you are bothered by any aspect of your health, see your doctor.
Stay blessed
