Should I Get Breast Implants?

Hey Toyin,

My boyfriend wants me to get breast implants because I have small breasts. I would like to know the implications of breast implants. Will it be a problem when I breast feed and what if I want to take them out? Do they even feel real? I am confused please help me…

Sarah

Hi Sarah,

Right off the bat, I have a problem with the fact that your boyfriend is asking you for this. Since I am aware that you wrote to Paula (relationship section) as well, I am going to stick to the health part of this question and let Paula deal with the relationship part.

Breast augmentation is the enhancement or reduction of breast tissue. Enhancement is usually done by the placing silicone filled bags behind the breast tissue and pushing them forward.

Do they have negative implications?

This answer depends on whom you ask; while it is an US FDA approved procedure and acceptable to many, there have been reports of negative side effects. These include swelling, scarring, wrinkling of skin over breast, rupture of implant, nerve damage, tissue damage, bleeding and the most important one, systemic illness. Systemic illness is the term for a diseases more commonly being reported from women who have had silicone implants. The symptoms are neurological (brain) and rheumatologic (joints, soft tissue and connective tissue) in nature and also noted are higher cases of fibromyalgia (pain in your muscles for absolutely no reason).

These side effects are not found in every single case but the risks are still there; many times women have to make the decision to have the implants removed based on their body’s reactions to them.

Would I be able to breast feed?

In itself, breast implants will not prevent you from breast feeding in the future but as I mentioned before the complications that MIGHT come up might impact your breast feeding. Let me break this down… it is your nerves in your breast that help with your milk “let down” reaction (releasing milk) so if these nerves are damaged, there will be complications.

Sarah, I know I said I would leave the relationship part to Paula but I need to tell you this. The size of any part of your body including your breasts does not make you or determine who you are as a woman of God. Doctors see many cases of women who get procedures done just to make other people happy with absolutely no thought to what they are doing to themselves . You need to consider who you are, as a woman and as a child of God. You are perfect in His sight.

Stay blessed
