Redefining “Devotion” 2

READ IT ALOUD: Thou shalt have no other gods before me (Exodus 20:3).

PONDER IT PRAYERFULLY: Sometimes we think that a few minutes of prayer every morning is good enough and licenses us to do whatever we want for the rest of the day but this is not the case. We will spend time with the person or thing we love the most. A halfhearted hour of prayer in the morning is pointless if we will be rude and gossip all day. If we say we love God, it should be evident in our lives. Furthermore, God expects and accepts nothing less than total devotion. He tells us in His word that He will not share His glory. He sees our hearts and knows what their states are no matter what we tell or try to show people. Anything that has more attention in our lives than God does is an idol.

BE A DOER (JAMES 1:22): If we cannot go about anything without being drawn away from God, then we are not devoted to Him. Every single activity in our lives should be carried out to His glory and with the conscious awareness of His presence. This is not the case most of the time, but it is definitely possible and all we have to do is ask Him to help us with it. Is it the internet, your job, or something else that is taking priority in your life? Seek God about it; He is willing to show us where we go wrong and not just guide but also accompany us in the right direction.

HIDE IT IN YOUR HEART (PSALM 119:11): I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images (Isaiah 42:8).

PRAY IT PERSONALLY: Father in heaven, forgive me for allowing idols to have priority in my life. Forgive me for not remembering that You have said that You will not share Your glory with anyone or anything. Lord, it is very easy to get distracted by the things of this world and I pray that You would help me to spend every moment with a conscious awareness of Your Presence. Let me be in constant communion with You, even at times when I might think it impossible. In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen.
