View from this Pew (Devotions by Chantal): Journey Necessities

Thou hast commanded us to keep thy precepts diligently (Psalm 119:4).

Life is like the wilderness that the Israelites went through before they came to the Promised Land. There were many dangers and challenges and the people had to depend on God to provide them with solutions and keep them going. For them to reach their destination, they needed to be equipped for the journey.

Most travelers need food, water, a map and a compass.

The Bible is a fresh supply of water that meets our daily thirsts. It is where we encounter our Daily Bread. Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life. So all our needs and the directions to them are found wrapped in this neat book called the Bible.

All the times the Israelites went wrong, they did so because they neglected their true Source. Scripture says, “if any would not work, neither let him eat” (2 Thessalonians 3:10).

Our salvation is bought at Calvary, but to be able to grow, there is an amount of work needed. Prayer and Bible-reading are tasks. They must be done by dedicated people; people who Focus on Jesus. They must be done diligently (Psalm 119:4); and this is the hardest part. It would be so nice if we could get saved and instantly grow spiritually the same day but this does not happen. Lastly we need to be disciplined soldiers; the flesh and the spirit war against each other and the flesh has to be subdued in order for victory to take place.

All the same, Jesus promises to strengthen us: “And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” (2 Corinthians 12:9)

Prayer: Thank You Jesus for the “tools” You provide to guide us daily. Please help us to remember that we need to constantly study the Word and be rooted in You for us to succeed in this wilderness journey, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
