Who are you? A king and a priest
by Bayo Adekola
When people meet for the first time, the first few things they exchange are basic information about themselves. Usually people make up opinions about others from the first few lines of exchange. What savour do you carry? What do people see when they see you? Do people really know how different you are? Do people easily know that you are a king and a priest? Let’s carefully go through some foundational passages to establish some things; (The words in red are for the sake of emphasis).
1 Peter 2:9
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
Romans 8:15-16
For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children
Romans 8:29
For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers
Three things I will like to point out from the above scriptures are “called” (called out from what?), “fatherhood” and “sonship”. We have been called out of darkness, slavery, beggary, all the ways and all the things that hold men bond. Have we really watched how Jesus lived on earth? He lived above everything, not that the same challenges did not come but he had mastery of them all. Why the reference to Jesus? Because we are to live as he lived. The winds obeyed him, they should obey us; the dead heard him call their names, the dead ought to hear us call their names and come to life, why? That is our inheritance as God’s children.
Romans 8:17
And if we are [His] children, then we are [His] heirs also: heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ [sharing His inheritance with Him]; only we must share His suffering if we are to share His glory.
We are joint heirs with Christ, meaning that we have access to the authority and dominion he had access to on earth, however, we need to walk the way he walked, in order to function the way he functioned. How did he walk? He walked in the knowledge of who he was, he walked in the knowledge of who the father is and what the father had made available to him. He lived as a son of God, we are sons too. If we are sons, where are the same works Jesus performed on earth? If Jesus alone could cause so much impact on earth in the few years he spent physically on earth; if we live in the actual realization of who we are as sons of God, we will turn this world around. The bible describes the story of a child who though he is the Lord of the house, is no different from a servant because he is but a child. When he grows up to know his rights, the same servants that pushed him around will answer to him. Many of us are stuck in the childhood stage and have been pushed about by the same things all of our lives. We need to leave the childhood stage and move into our rightful positions as sons. The difference between the child that was pushed around and the son who rules over the affairs of his father is the Knowledge of who he is. I ask again, who are you? You are the son of the most high God, you are a King and a priest, you are joint heirs with Christ Jesus.
We have the nature of God in us. We are partakers of his divine nature. If you were to be given a surname in the Kingdom of God, it will be king, lord, god, and priest.
Hebrews 5:10
…and was designated by God to be high priest in the order of Melchizedek
Genesis 14:18
And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.
Revelation 5:10
And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.
The above scripture says we are kings and priests unto our God and we will reign on the earth. This is a very important revelation of who we are and how our lives ought to be like. We are supposed to reign in life. What does it mean to reign? I checked dictionary.com and it defines reign as a period during which something or somebody is dominant or powerful. We are dominant race, we are a powerful people but if we don’t walk in the consciousness of it, we cannot live in its reality.
Kings reign, rule, give commands, take dominion, have authority, have power, are honoured, make decrees, are decision makers, warriors, defend a course, take charge, and defend the kingdom they are from. Wherever kings go, they represent their kingdom. Though they might be in another kingdom, they always identify with their kingdom. Kings are not weaklings, are not beggars, and are not pushed around. Which kind of king are you? It is time to rise up to the position that God has given us. He has called us to be kings. Let’s stop acting like we are just any other people; we are the chosen generation. We are the children of the most high God, we are kings, our God is the King of kings.
How can I be a king? Be like God; live on earth the way Jesus lived. Jesus came to show us how to live as sons, follow in his footsteps.
Ephesians 5:1
Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children
How does God operate? God calls those things that be not as though they were. (Romans 4:17).
He called creation to be…Genesis 1.
Notice that the bible records that the earth was without form and void? But not once did God refer to it as that…He declared what he wanted it to be. Stop focussing on what you see. STOP! Focus on God and exercise the authority God has given you. Declare what you want to see into existence…don’t stop until you see the manifestation.
Do we say just anything? No, we say the Word of God
John 1: 1-3
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
You cannot transform situations without the Word because without the Word was nothing made that was made.
God’s talk is faith. Talk like him. Faith is the currency that brings the supernatural to manifestation in the natural world. You carry the currency that imports the supernatural into the natural world, use it. We are born to reign in life.
In the city of Ephesus, so mightily grew the word of God, they prevailed. The more you grow in the word, the more you prevail in the affairs of life. We have taken enough lessons from the world; we are the solution to this world. We are sons of the maker of everything, He is our Father and He has given us all authority in heaven and on earth. Let’s begin to exercise it. You can only live this life as a king by living the Word…You cannot live above your revelation of the Word of God.
God is not timid…..
II Tim 1:7…. For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.
Many times, we believers act so timid and helpless. Life dictates to us and many of us weep and are weary. It is time for the sons of God to arise and begin to take charge. The scriptures declare that those that know their God will stand and they will do exploits. Remember this, we cannot live everyday like every other person does and expect our lives to be any different than theirs. If we walk like slaves, we will live like one. Set your attention on God and you will never live a defeated life.
The bible also describes God as a warrior….He is Lord strong and mighty, he is the Lord mighty in battle…. Don’t cross your fingers and hope things will happen. You make things happen. …On mount Zion there shall be deliverance and the sons of Jacob shall possess their possessions…. God has done his part, stand up, pick up your sword and fight the good fight of faith.
For everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith – 1 John 5:4.
Exodus 19:6
And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation….
Heb 7:25
Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.
In the Old Testament, the priests ministered in the Holy place and the high priest went into the most holy place once a year. After our high priest made the ultimate sacrifice shedding his blood at Calvary, the curtains to the most holy place was torn (Mathew 27:51). This gave us full access as priests into the most holy place. We are to go before God at all times and minister as priests in his temple (our body) unto our God. We are to intercede for others as priests. As priests, we are to minister unto God through worship, offerings and our actions.
Romans 15:16
To be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles with the priestly duty of proclaiming the gospel of God, so that the Gentiles might become an offering acceptable to God, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.
Part of our priestly role is to proclaim the gospel of God to the unsaved. We should do this in words and in deed. No matter the circumstances you find yourself in, remember that you are a king and a priest unto our God.
