Decently and In Order
READ IT ALOUD: Let all things be done decently and in order (1 Corinthians 14:40).
PONDER IT PRAYERFULLY: The word “decent” does not only refer to things of a sexual nature (as most people derive from its antonym, “indecent”). It simply means “morally upright or acceptable” or “meeting [an] accepted standard” (Free Online Dictionary).
Order, according to one website, is simply “a condition in which each thing is properly disposed with reference to other things and to its purpose; methodical for harmonious arrangement”. Yet most people think neat houses or families with many children.
So what Paul is basically telling us is to let ALL things be done respectably, morally uprightly, meeting God’s accepted standard, and with proper disposition in relation to the other things in our lives.
Our daily devotions, the way we cook our meals, our conversations with others, our relationships – friendship and beyond, our studies and leisure time and sleep and waking up and praise and worship and evangelism – every single thing we put any effort into should be done decently and in order.
BE A DOER (JAMES 1:22): The situation I surround myself with is the situation within me. Chaos can affect the mood of even the most-peaceful person for as long as s/he is in the flesh. Order can create a feeling of relief from a hectic or chaotic situation. Decency is what shows what our focus truly is – if we are preoccupied with ourselves and with others’ opinions of us we will serve them. If we are preoccupied with God we will serve Him. Serving God is honourable and, therefore, decent
HIDE IT IN YOUR HEART (PSALM 119:11): For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints (1 Corinthians 14:33).
PRAY IT PERSONALLY: Father in heaven, when I am disorganized, my heart suffers. Teach me to be a decent woman who does all things in order. Let me do it not as a show of fake modesty but rather as a show of virtue, that perpetual thankfulness that births a desire in me to please You. Clean up my heart, and help me clean up my surroundings, in Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen.
