Always Ready
READ IT ALOUD: Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning (Luke 12:35).
PONDER IT PRAYERFULLY: During the days when Jesus spoke these words, people used candles/burning torches and the men ungirded their loins before they went to sleep at night. We can call the current times a night of sorts; when the Bible says the night is far spent and the day is at hand (Romans 13:12), it is referring to the fact that we are living in a dark world and are supposed to shine to God’s glory.
Spiritually speaking, however, we should never ungird our loins. We should be constantly aware of the times and ready to act on God’s Word. The Bible says the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night (2 Peter 3:10). If a thief catches a man or a family unawares, they first take time to fumble around and figure out what is happening. This should not be the case with us. When the Lord returns, we should not be caught unawares or start to look around and wonder what is going on. Instead, we should be that ready Bride that has been awaiting Him all our lives.
BE A DOER (JAMES 1:22): The verse before this, Luke 12:34, tells us that our treasure will be where our heart is. If we are thinking about the Lord and awaiting His return, then we will watch out for signs of it like a child listens for the signs of a parent’s return from work. Paul tells us in Ephesians that our loins should be girt about with truth (Ephesians 6:14). One truth is we are living in the last days and we really have no time for petty affections and lusts. We must look heavenward and remember that our Focus is Jesus Christ. None of us should be caught unawares when He returns.
We must be ready to give people a reason for the hope that is in us (1 Peter 3:15). We must make disciples. We must pray that the Lord would send labourers to the harvest (Luke 10:2, Matthew 9:38). And most of all we must work out our own salvation with fear and trembling.
HIDE IT IN YOUR HEART (PSALM 119:11): Be ye therefore ready also; for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not (Luke 12:40).
PRAY IT PERSONALLY: Lord Jesus, You said You have gone to prepare a place for us, Your disciples; Your children; Your friends. You said that You are returning soon. Help us not to be discouraged by events or the seeming lack thereof; help us to continually keep our eyes stayed on You. Let Your Bride be ready when You come for her; let the church live out the calling that You have placed on her life. Let me remember that I am accountable for my own actions and that You require obedience and not sacrifice. In Your own dear Name I pray; Amen.
