Forget the Wrapping Paper and Focus on the Gift
by Philippa Wesonga
Being alive is a gift and would be a gift even if you were a bacterium or amoeba floating somewhere. So can you imagine how special it is to be created in God’s image? He knew you intimately before even your parents thought about you. You are a masterpiece and that makes you special.
When you think about yourself in the light of this wonderful news, it’s hard to waste time thinking about who likes you, gossiped about you, stole your boyfriend and isn’t paying enough attention to you. It’s even hard to keep focusing on the mistakes you made fifteen years, weeks or hours ago. God LOVES you, just the way you are, and He knew every mistake you would ever make but chose to love you anyway. Don’t waste your time trying to get people to see that you are special. Mind your own business, love like you are supposed to and the beauty will shine through in full glare of everyone.
Does it matter if you are fat, thin, tall, short, dark-skinned or light-skinned, rich or poor, black or white? Not at all, especially not when these things are measured against your true God-given value. Gifts may be wrapped in newspaper, brown paper, polythene or gold-studded gift paper but the wrapping paper will be forgotten long before the gift is.
You are a gift. And your life is a gift. This year, I suggest, take time out frequently to rejoice in people who rejoice in you instead of moaning about those who may not like you or be what you expect. That doesn’t mean hang out with vain flatterers, but rather stick around true friends, who will correct you when you mess up and who will be happy for you when you rejoice. I urge you to be a true friend to those whose paths you are blessed to cross and to remember while you relate with them that they, too are special gifts to be treasured above measure. Maximize yourself and your talents and inspire those who are around you. Your life was given to make God’s praise glorious.
Happy New Year!
