Blood circulation and long trips

airplane-exercisesDear Toyin,
How can we ensure proper blood circulation on long trips, such as long bus
drives or flights? I travel a lot by bus and sometimes find that for a few
days after my journeys I have aches and pains which I associate with
sitting in one position.
Blessings,
Elsie Kuteyi

Hi Elsie
I love your name. You bring up an excellent question. I too am a frequent flyer and proper circulation can be the difference between life and death for some individuals. Did you know that blood clots most commonly start in the lower extremities and if they get to the lung (pulmonary Embolism), it is an emergency that can be fatal? The key to prevent this is simple; movement!
When you are on the plane, train or automobile make sure you periodically move and exercise your limbs. This could be as simple as raising your arms above your head, stretching your legs out in front of you, twisting your head side to side but most importantly if you get the chance, STAND UP AND WALK! You can take a trip to the ladies room or walk down the aisle a bit. As I mentioned, the trick is to move your limbs from time to time and as long as you do that, you’re fine. I am an avid traveler too so if you ever run into me in an airport, please stop to say hi.
Stay blessed and happy travels!
