What’s On His Mind; His Master or His Money?

by Diana Kabeizi

“I would not even think about dating a man that is not loaded,” Basiima said emphatically to her sister.
I was seated on the opposite side of the table, intently watching the two sisters converse about money and what it can give people.

“What about if the man has the potential to make the money?” I tried to join in the conversation.

“No. No,” they both intercepted, “How would you know that the man has the potential to make the money, if he does not have it now??” It looked like I was fighting a losing battle; the two sisters had made up their minds. I did not know where this conversation was headed, so I excused myself. That conversation ran through my mind the whole week. Interestingly, that same Sunday in church, the pastor read the scripture in Matthew 19:16-23, after which he made a comment which I will paraphrase: “I guess, mothers, you would be very happy to have such a rich young ruler as your son-in-law!!!”

We have all heard stories from people who have finally realised that money can’t buy love, happiness, homes, appetite and the list goes on. Why then the whole fuss about money??

Jesus mentions a rich fool in Luke 12:13-21 in v 15. And he said unto them, Take heed and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. Whether we get the men with lots of money or not, it doesn’t matter because a man’s life is not measured in what he owns! Remember the young rich ruler; think about him, how many ladies would love to get married to him – and yet he still felt that there was something lacking in his life. He knew all the commandments and kept them (he attended church!!!) yet his possessions were a barrier between him and eternal life. Does that mean that Christians should not have any material wealth? No. However, the wealth was blocking the man’s way into eternal life, so like the young ruler if making of money or storing up of wealth is coming in our relationship with God, then we need to re-evaluate our treasure!!

How many times have we written up a list of qualities of the men that we want to date? I remember someone asked me, “Shall we eat love?” when I was telling her about money not being a prerequisite for a Mr. Right. The Bible in Matthew 6:21 teaches us that where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. Let us learn not to put our treasure in riches and money and end up missing what the Lord has in store for us. “Riches profit in the day of wrath: But righteousness delivereth from death” Proverbs 11:4. The Bible has many references on not trusting riches but trusting God (Proverbs 23:5, Jeremiah 17:11, Luke 12:21; 1 Timothy 6:17). Sisters, are we looking out for men after the Master or men after the money??
Again I will leave you with something to think about from Illustrations Unlimited by James S Hewett:

Money as an index of character.

Money is one of the acid tests of character and a surprising amount of space is given to it in scripture….Whether a man is rich or poor observe his reaction to his possessions and you have a revealing index to his character. Oswald Sanders, A Spiritual Clinic.

Blessings!!
