Have I Been Looking Past the Windshield?

The Word: … God is love (1 Jn 4:8b).

Prayerful Contemplation: Today, God reminded me of a message that He has given all women. “I love you, and I want to be your Friend.” It’s amazing how hard we try to find love and approval everywhere but in the Place where we can truly find it. God is reaching out to us, holding out His hand to us, orchestrating our lives so that we cannot help but run into Him.

Waking up in the morning and looking at the beautiful sunrise should cause us to wonder Who loves us so much that He put that sun in its place and held it in that beautiful position for us to see it when we opened our eyes. Rain that falls and soaks the earth, watering it so that we can have food, should trigger a question in our minds – who sent that rain down? And who keeps us breathing and keeps our blood flowing – what if we had to monitor these processes that we take for granted?

Jon Courson once spoke of an incident where he noticed something on his windshield, and God used that moment to speak to him. The windshield of Pastor Jon’s car had always been there, but it took an “incident” for him to notice it, because the shield had always been clean. Every single time he was in the car, he used the windshield, but did not really notice it because although he always looked through it, he also looked past it to other things.

How many times do we look past God to other things? He is always there, and He is the reason that we can see the road. Pastor Jon would have been unable to drive without his windshield. He would have choked on dust, or gotten rained on – and it would not be long before he rammed into someone or was inconvenienced for some reason or other – a bug entering his eye or things flying out of his car because the dashboard would no longer be secure or the wind would blow them away.

Practical Application: I should not look past God to other things, for He is the only reason that I remain on the road. It rains outside, but He protects me because He is like a windshield, keeping me from the cold and the wind and the intense heat. Even if the dropping temperatures seep into the car, I know that it is God keeping my situation from getting any worse. I am not outside getting drenched. And if I am outside getting drenched, then I am not getting drowned. And if I am getting drowned, then I will hear His voice telling me to walk on that water. This week and always, I should thank the Lord for keeping me through times of trial, and ask His forgiveness for the blessings He has given me that I have taken for granted.

Memory Verse: The LORD hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad (Psalm 126:3).

Prayer: Father, You have done great things for me – let me be glad and rejoice in You. In You, my God, may You always be my song, and not the fleeting, material things of this world. If it were not for You, I would not have what I have, and I know that You are enough for me if I have nothing left in the world. Be my only portion, and may I remember that You have loved me with an everlasting love. Teach me and use me to reach out and love others the way You have loved me. In Jesus’ Name.
